How do you cook chili beef, so it’s tender on the inside, and super crispy on the outside? And we are going to coat it with a glossy sweet chili sauce! This will become your favorite crispy chili beef recipe! All you need is 30 minutes!

Crispy Chili Beef Recipe

Serving: 2 to 4
Prep time: 25 minutes
Cook time: 5 minutes

For the beef and marinades:
1 ½ pounds beef (eye of round steak)
Pinch of salt
1 egg white
1 tablespoon Shaoxing wine, or replace with other cooking wine
Pinch of white pepper
Pinch of baking soda
½ cup cornstarch
4 cups oil, for frying

For the sauce:
5 tablespoons sweet chili sauce
3 tablespoons ketchup
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 tablespoon sugar

For the stir fry:
1 tablespoon oil
½ onion, thinly sliced
1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
2 stalks scallions

Crispy Chili Beef Instructions

To prepare the beef:
  • In a large bowl, add the beef steak, salt, and egg white. (Egg white helps to tenderize the beef.) Well combine.
  • Then add the Shaoxing wine, white pepper, and baking soda. (Baking soda also helps to tenderize the beef.) Thoroughly combine. Marinate for 15 minutes.
  • Coat the beef steak with cornstarch and mix well.
To make the sauce:
  • In a bowl, mix together the sweet chili sauce, ketchup, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and sugar.
To fry the beef:
  • In a pot over high heat, pour the oil inside. Heat it up to 350 degrees F (177 degrees C).
  • Carefully place the beef steak inside, and fry for about 2 minutes. Remove.
  • Heat the oil to 375 degrees F (191 degrees C). Return the beef and fry until crispy for 1 minute. (Double frying makes it super crispy.) Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
To stir-fry:
  • In a wok over high heat, add the oil, onion, and red bell pepper. Stir fry until aromatic for about 20 seconds. Pour the sauce inside. Return the beef. Coat the beef with the sauce. Lastly, garnish with scallions.
