2 Ways to Quickly Regrow Scallions, Soil VS Water!

2 Ways to Regrow Scallions: Soil vs. Water

I’d like to share with you 2 easy ways to regrow scallions at home! Whether you’re working with a sunny windowsill or a small patio, both methods are fast and fun. But which one grows faster—soil or water? Let’s find out!

Regrow Scallions in Soil

1. Cut the scallions:

  • Trim off the green tops and store them in the fridge for cooking.
  • Save the white root ends for planting.

2. Prepare the soil:

  • Fill a pot with potting mix and plant the white parts root-side down.
  • Leave a bit of space between each piece for airflow and growth.

3. Care and sunlight:

  • Water daily to keep the soil moist but not soggy.
  • Place the pot in a spot with about 6 hours of direct sunlight.
  • Ideal temperature: 68–78°F (20–26°C).

Regrow Scallions in Water

1. Prep the scallions:

  • Again, trim off and save the green tops for cooking.
  • Place the white root ends into a cup or jar with about 1 inch of water.

2. Care and sunlight:

  • Change the water daily to keep it fresh and clean.
  • Set the container in a bright spot with around 6 hours of sunlight.
  • Ideal temperature: 68–78°F (20–26°C).

Tips & notes

  • Scallions in water may sprout faster, but the soil method often gives sturdier, longer-lasting results.
  • Use organic scallions if possible—they tend to regrow more reliably.
  • Once regrown, trim the green tops as needed and watch them grow back again!
  • This is a fun kitchen experiment to do with kids or to reduce food waste at home.

  1. I like your videos. Grow in soil at home is the easiest. Just add some nutrients to soil as needed. Scallions are inexpensive, thus it’s more to grow it yourself. Keep up the good videos. 🙂
