The gong resounds, the curtain opens, and fairies emerge from a sea of billowing clouds. Mongolians ride on horseback across grasslands as vast as the sky. Dynasties rise and fall—as ancient legends of love, loss, humor and valor unfold before your eyes. We set out to create a performance so extraordinary, it would not only capture the grandeur of China’s ancient, divinely-inspired culture… You just might catch a glimpse of heaven.
5,000 Years of Civilization Reborn
But after decades of communist rule, much of this divinely inspired culture has been lost. Now, ancient legends and timeless virtues come alive on stage, preserving the essence of a civilization that has endured for millennia. With every performance, Shen Yun conveys the extraordinary depth and breadth of genuine Chinese culture, bringing the magnificence of 5,000 years of civilization vividly back to life.
A Grand Production
Eight companies, with five hundred world-class artists perform a breathtaking, all-new production every year. Each performance consists of about 20 pieces, quickly moving from one legend, region, or dynasty to the next. Themes range from the delicate elegance of Tang court ladies to the battlefield heroics of valiant generals, from the timeless philosophical works of Lao-Tzu to spectacular scenes of heavenly realms… transporting you to a magical world.
But it Hasn’t Been Easy
Many of our performers practice Falun Gong, a peaceful meditation exercise which has been persecuted by communist China since 1999—a heart-wrenching story that we also include on stage. A story that tells of what our family members have endured at the hands of a brutal, atheist regime. A story that Beijing seeks to silence.
